The PCTE evening classes are introductory classes designed for Montessori classroom assistants, parents, educators, childcare providers, grandparents, and anyone with an interest in learning more about Montessori education.
The heart of Montessori philosophy is to “follow the child” and to provide children with the foundation for developing purposeful, responsible and fulfilling lives. This class offers an overview of the Montessori method as found in the primary works of Maria Montessori and various contemporary authors. Topics covered include the study of Dr. Montessori’s life; development of the Montessori method; preparation of an environment; observation; role of the adult; nature of the child; discipline, spiritual preparation and personal development of the teacher. Montessori principles are summarized by the developmental stages of the child. In addition, Montessori child care and its historical foundations are detailed.
Why is it important to study how children grow, learn, and change? An understanding of child development is essential because it allows us to fully appreciate the cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and educational growth that children go through from birth and into early adulthood. Child development is key to understanding the needs of the child and their normal course of growth and development. This class provides a study of the basic theories of child development according to the major child developmentalists: Rousseau, Dewey, Piaget, Froebel, and Vygotsky, etc. and their contributions to the field will be discussed. Learners will examine the social, emotional, physical, cognitive and spiritual characteristics of children at each of their developmental stages. Current research, based on scientific findings, is woven into the lectures, videos and class discussions.
